Time with a Teacher

Time with a Teacher

Spending time in the company of a good teacher is very important in the practice of yoga. Chapter 6:23 of the Bhagavad Gita states, “yoga must be practiced with faith, with a strong and courageous heart.” In essence, this means that satsang with a Guru/teacher is very important. We must never give up on our sadhana, as we must always study and practice to be better devotees. Buying a few books on spirituality will never really help us; it may provide us with consolation, or temporary relief from our dilemma, but it will not ultimately change our condition of suffering.

To really have a shot at changing our orientation towards life would require a dramatic shift in our priorities; we would have to become a lot more devoted to God, and less devoted to ourselves. In order to ultimately to become enlightened, we would have to devote our whole life to God. The problem is that most of us do not know how to devote ourselves, or practice, and furthermore, most of us don’t even want to practice. Truly, it was by the grace of my Guru that I was given the chance to learn how to practice. This grace provided me with the tools to realize more intense forms of happiness.

Many people that I have talked to, particularly Westerners, don’t seem to think they need a Guru. This is the myth that propels the self-help movement. The message generally is “I realized happiness on my own and so you can you!” I can testify from my own experience that frequent and direct contact with a spiritual friend is essential to the enjoyment of real happiness. As Bodhidharma once said, “Only one person in a million becomes enlightened without a teacher’s help.” I find this interesting because a lot of people in the self-help movement seem to be saying that they don’t need anyone to help them but themsleves. I am definitely not one in a million in this context of whom Bodhidharma speaks, neither were most of the great sages that we know of, including Gautama Buddha. In this context, the true devotee of God is a devotee first and a teacher second. Being a teacher is not a status, just a function, and at the end of the day the teacher is just a devotee. Life is the real teacher! Life is  what is communicating to us and teaching us in every moment and through everything, and most of us need intensive contact with a teacher in order to translate this communication into a language we can understand.

The human Guru is a part of us, as they are a representative of our greater nature. Without the human Guru there would not be the opportunity to realize Nirvana. I cannot, and will not, be able to ever separate my spirituality from my Gurus, as they are a progressive expression of different stages of awakening in my own spiritual journey. If you have ever spent any time with one, you know what I am talking about.  Don’t believe the self-help myth: we all need help. How can the ego grant itself such graceful gifts such as enlightenment? Truly, it is God that gives us everything that we have and need. The true process of initiation is always through the direct transference of wisdom from one initiate to another. Realization is best served through the direct communication of an adept.

Divine Indifference

Divine Indifference

When I speak of indifference in spiritual terms, I don’t mean indifference in the usual sense of the word. This is because there is no receptivity, no sensitivity implied by the general use of the word indifference. When I am discussing indifference, I am speaking in terms of divine indifference. This is the kind of indifference that only appears through the recognition of the true state of conditions. Happiness is ultimately realized through the recognition and eventual understanding of the nature of conditional existence. When you have understood yourself, you will be divinely indifferent to the conditions that you suffer from. This is the quality of indifference that is enjoyed in Satsang. When you are happy, you will be indifferent to the qualities of your experience that make you unhappy. There will be no effort to avoid anything painful, you will simply be happy. When you have realized happiness you will be ecstatically indifferent.

Non-duality : The Treasure of Enlightenment

Non-duality : The Treasure of Enlightenment

The external world is a collective reflection of our individual states of being. All of our experiences are reflections of our present quality of relationship. Everything that we are experiencing is completely appropriate in regards to our present condition of awareness. Everything including our present experience is acceptable and appropriate for the processes of our conscious development. The circumstance of our existence is meant to be, it is God’s will for it to be this way. If we are to enjoy Satsang we must not be in duality about non-perfection. Satsang is about freedom from preferences. True happiness is about transcendence of doubt. To be in Satsang is to be in utter joy in the midst of apparent pain, suffering and death. Conditional existence is just a limitation, the ego is always trying to make conditional existence into something other than what it is. The way is to transcend the inherent nature of conditions. To enjoy and love life in the midst of pain and suffering is the enjoyment of Satsang. When you realize your native condition, you will not be in despair about the quality of your experience, you will simply be happy. Non-duality is the essence of Satsang, it is the treasure of true enlightenment.

Satsang is the Key (Black Friday)

Satsang is the Key (Black Friday)

Black Friday is a reflection of our societal state of being. This culture of consumerism is an obvious sign of the collective collapse of society, and the family. We are collectively losing our humanity, and our common decency. The lack of support and appreciation for the conscious being in our global society is a clear sign of the inevitable degeneration and collapse of our culture. We can insure that this cycle will continue for as long as bureaucrats and sports athletes are worshiped, and our wise men and philosophers go forgotten. In fact, this continued trend will ensure that life on this planet will continue to degenerate, ultimately leading to the very destruction of our species and the ecosystem. Satsang is imperative for real prosperity! With the opportunity of satsang we face the prospect of the meaningfulness of spiritual evolution. With conscious conductivity in our relationships, we can express our highest aspirations and passions. Embracing this wisdom will allow us to communicate our greatest strengths and overcome our most feared weaknesses. In this way we can share the fruits of life with each other, and embrace the qualities of our highest evolution. Satsang is the key to fulfilling our ultimate destiny.

The Revelation of Satsang

The Revelation of Satsang

The inclination at the core of un-enlightenment is seeking. It can be felt through the dramatization of the sensation of separation and abandonment. This form of dis-ease is manifested through the tendency to react to the binding effects of self contraction. When there is true understanding, you will be established in the revelation of the unspeakable God. By the completion of this yoga, you will dwell in the house of the divine for eternity as you always have. When enlightenment is enjoyed the true revelation of satsang is realized.

The Enjoyment of Satsang

The Enjoyment of Satsang

Our conventional inclinations are not an expression of happiness. The way of happiness is through the transcendence of our egoic inclinations. As your understanding intensifies you will gradually minimize, or abandon the gestures that diminish happiness, and you will begin to disregard the gestures that express unhappiness. This is the true spiritual work of sadhana as the enjoyment of satsang will increase as a progressive result of the intensification of this sadhana. As you are purified you will become more and more capable of enjoying real happiness. This is the progressive process of way of satsang, or enlightenment. The intuition of our native condition is the enjoyment of satsang.
